Karen is a very successful businesswoman in an industry traditionally seen as male-dominated. She was previously Customer Service Director, and deputy MD, for First Capital Connect, where she combined the customer service elements of the two previous businesses, and delivered significant improvements in both customer satisfaction and service quality. She was also the Chairperson of FirstInfo, FirstGroup's customer service investment program, which led to a significant rise in customer satisfaction.

Before joining the rail industry Karen was a Department Head of Customer Services at First Great Western where she developed and implemented a major customer service investment programme, which led to significant rise in customer satisfaction.

Before joining the rail industry, Karen worked for Aramark as Regional Managing Director, where she led a number of successful bids and business integration projects. She also worked in a variety of senior positions within the catering and hospitality sectors for Granada and Allied Lyons
