Yvette Cooper MP was first elected to Parliment at the 1997 general election. She currently represents the constituency of Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford and holds the post of Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Women and Equality.
Before being elected, Yvtette worked as an enconomics researcher to John Smith MP, for the Bill Clinton for President campaign and for the Shadow Chief Secretary to The Treasury Harriet Harman MP. In 1995 she became the economic correspondent with The Independent
As well as being an active consitiuency MP, Yvette has been leading the Labour campaign against the reduction in the policing budget on a national level and has done some research in partnership with the Fawcett Society on how the government's economic policies are affecting women.
Under the last government Yvette held a number of positions including Housing Minster and Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Yvette lives in Castleford with her husband and their three children.
